Until a few months ago, the closest Sarah Jacques had come to Australian cuisine was dinner at Outback.

But here she was, on her last night in Australia preparing to eat, of all things, kangaroo.

"Our last night there, our tour guide cooked us kangaroo," the St. Thomas Aquinas soccer player said. "No one wanted to eat it. On our first day there, we went to a zoo and pet them. Then, the last day, we ate them."

Talk about culture shock.

But for Jacques and her teammates, traveling to Australia was about more than adjusting to new foods.

It was about adjusting to each other.

The Raiders competed in—and won—the Kanga Cup, a prestigious youth soccer tournament played in Australia. And Jacques believes the long flights and hours on the field are only going to help when the season begins.

"We really got a deeper understanding of the culture in Australia but the best thing for us was getting to spend time together," she said. "We have a young team and being able to go there and get close as a team, it's going to make us better this season."
